PHOENIX, AZ – Following the signing of the Laken Riley Act (S.5) on January 29, eleven Arizona-based immigrants’ rights organizations sent senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego a public letter condemning their support for the bill. This follows a month of advocacy from local and national partners urging the senators to oppose the bill, including letters sent by the ACLU of Arizona outlining legal and ethical concerns.
“We sounded the alarm on the dangers of passing the Laken Riley Act, but our concerns went unanswered,” said ACLU of Arizona’s Border Policy Strategist, Noah Schramm. “The impact of this legislation will undoubtedly be felt by the very families who put Senators Kelly and Gallego in office.”
