PHOENIX – The national ACLU today announced a $500,000 campaign in the Arizona secretary of state race. In partnership with the ACLU of Arizona, the organizations aim to inform voters that their civil rights and liberties, including voting rights, are on the ballot this November. Voter guides will be sent to more than 230,000 voters across the state to educate voters about candidates’ stances on key issues in the race. The ACLU and ACLU of Arizona are nonpartisan and do not support or oppose candidates for office, nor contribute to their campaigns.

"Arizona’s secretary of state is entrusted with upholding Arizona election law and abiding by the state and U.S. Constitutions. It is imperative that Arizona voters know where candidates stand when it comes to protecting the fundamental right to vote.” said Victoria López, Executive Director for the ACLU of Arizona. “Protecting our democracy means protecting our elections for every eligible voter in Arizona. The goal of this campaign is to ensure Arizonans have the resources they need to cast an informed vote this election season.”

As the state's chief elections officer, the secretary of state has a critical role in ensuring responsible oversight and administration of elections in Arizona, including:

  • Maintaining the Elections Procedure Manual, which contains procedures that election officials must follow to keep election practices consistent and efficient across the state;
  • Maintaining the statewide voter registration database;
  • Certifying voting devices;
  • Certifying ballot measures;
  • Certifying election results after each county board of supervisors canvasses the results for their jurisdiction; and
  • Canvassing and certifying the results of federal, statewide, and legislative offices.

Given increased federal attacks on voting rights and electoral processes, voters have the opportunity to elect leaders who will protect their fundamental rights and their voice at the ballot box.
